Abstract: Where do you want to work after you graduate?
Many of us have done a few years of research in academia and a few years of product development in industry, but
virtually no research in industry. How will we make an informed job choice if we don't have much information on research in industry?
To get informed about my post-graduation choices, I have investigated differences between software research in academia and industry. I will summarize what I learned from research literature on this subject, from statistics on hiring, salaries and funding, and from personal interviews of people who work in industry research labs. I found that compared to academic research, industry research is more utilitarian, accessible to new PhDs, product-focused, and collaborative.
