Abstract: After 9/11 it became very fashionable to think of terrorists groups as
social networks - reflecting the social and communication ties among the
terrorists. Such an approach, however, tempting, is not 100% suited to
the type of available data; nor, does it facilitate reasoning about
change in a way that supports effects based operations. In this talk, an
approach that combines social network analysis, link-analysis,
organizational theorizing and multi-agent simulation is presented. Then, this approach is applied to two open-source data sets to demonstrate the
types of results and predictions possible.
