Chip Walter, Science Writer and Future Trends Specialist

Author Presentation & Booksigning

Abstract:
"To write this book Bill and Chip traveled for the better part of a year to major universities and research institutions all over the country. They dropped in at the MIT Media Lab, NASA, The Foresight Institute, Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute, the Human Genome Project and the Entertainment Technology Center to 'mind meld' with the world's leading experts in robotics, advanced propulsion, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, nanotechnology, even time travel."

SPEAKER BIO:
Chip Walter is an author and consultant who specializes in the effects that emerging technologies have on business, media and culture. His experience as an author, science journalist, documentary filmmaker, feature film screenwriter and former CNN Bureau Chief is unusually diverse and has helped him develop a unique view of the relationship between technology and "the rest of us." His background often enables him to see issues from several points of view, develop creative, integrated strategies and then shift gears to help transform those strategies into actions that produce concrete results. Chip has served as National Programming Executive at WQED-TV, CEO of Digital Alchemy Inc., Vice-President and Executive Producer of ENGAGE Games Online and CNN San Francisco Bureau Chief. Although he now devotes most of his time to writing, he has also consulted with several nationally recognized organizations, helping them to develop creative new business strategies, content, and services that address the impact of disruptive technologies. His clients have included The National Geographic Society, Ketchum Inc., Education Management Corporation, Xing Technologies and many other organizations, large and small.

Carnegie Mellon researchers and some of their cutting work take center stage in this new book about the future written by STAR TREK's Captain Kirk, William Shatner, and science writer and future trends specialist Chip Walter. They explore how many of the technologies envisioned in Star Trek's television series and movies are now becoming realties. The book explores everything from warp drive and time travel to smart matter and artificial intelligence. The book connects the themes and concepts envisioned by Star Trek more than 30 years ago with research being done to make these technologies realities in the 21st rather than the 23rd century.
